The short answer
Zeni describes itself as "an all-in-one finance and accounting platform for startups," and says plainly that "Zeni is a full-service platform, where everything is managed by our in-house team of certified accounting experts." Every bookkeeping plan includes a dedicated finance team (a Controller, a Bookkeeping Manager, and a Bookkeeping Analyst), and Zeni says entries are made "by a blend of human financial experts in collaboration with our AI-powered technology platform" (source).
ClearBooks is software. Nobody at ClearBooks keeps your books for you. You, the AI bookkeeping agent, or a bookkeeper you invite do the work, and every change the agent wants to make is shown to you as a Confirm/Cancel card first. The same books are open to your own agents through an MCP server (300+ tools) and a REST API (280+ endpoints).
So the decision is less about AI and more about who does the work: Zeni's team, or you with an agent.

Where Zeni is better
- People do the work. Zeni's finance team keeps your books, and its Finance Concierge is a single point of contact staffed Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Pacific, with a stated aim of completing requests within two hours (source). ClearBooks has no bookkeepers on staff.
- Tax filing and CFO advice from one vendor. Zeni's tax plans are $2,499/year for pre-revenue companies and $3,899/year for companies with revenue up to $500K, and include federal and state corporate income tax filing; Delaware franchise tax filing is a $300 add-on. Fractional CFO plans start at $1,599/month plus a $2,000 setup fee. ClearBooks prepares the 1120 and Form 100 but does not file them.
- Money movement. Zeni bundles AI Bill Pay, reimbursements, and business checking accounts into its bookkeeping plans. ClearBooks records bills and payroll but does not pay anyone.
- Payroll operations. Zeni's Payroll Manager Service (from $199/month on an annual contract) covers employee onboarding, termination, and payroll system management, with federal and state payroll filings available as an add-on. ClearBooks payroll calculates and posts paychecks but does not pay employees or e-file. See payroll.
Where ClearBooks is better
- Cost at the earliest stages. ClearBooks starts free and Pro is $29/month. Zeni's bookkeeping starts at $549/month, which is the price of having a team do the work.
- You own the books in real time. There is no request queue. Transactions sync through Plaid, the agent categorizes and reconciles, and reports reflect today's numbers.
- An agent that can act, under your control. Zeni MCP is read-only by design, with write actions listed on its roadmap (source). The ClearBooks MCP server and REST API can read and write, limited by the scopes on each key, so your own agent can categorize, reconcile, invoice, or run payroll. Period-close locks are enforced in the database, so they hold for the app, the API, the MCP server, and the agent. See AI bookkeeping.
- No second ledger to pay for. ClearBooks is its own double-entry ledger with a general ledger, trial balance, bank reconciliation, and audit log. See reconciliation and close.
- Startup filings and equity in one place. ClearBooks prepares Form 1120 and California Form 100 from your books and fills the official PDFs, tracks deadlines such as the Delaware franchise tax, and keeps SAFEs and convertible notes on a cap table next to the ledger. See tax and equity.
Using both, and switching
A common path is to start on software while pre-revenue, then move to a service once volume, investor reporting, or tax complexity justifies the cost.
Moving from Zeni to ClearBooks:
- Ask for your closed books through the last month end. Because Zeni works in QuickBooks Online Plus, you can export the chart of accounts, trial balance, and transaction detail from there.
- Import transactions by CSV and enter opening balances as journal entries.
- Connect bank and card accounts through Plaid and let the agent categorize new activity.
- Reconcile the first month before relying on reports, and keep a CPA for the tax return review.
If you later hand the books to a service or firm, ClearBooks exports journal entries in QuickBooks IIF and Xero manual-journal CSV formats. See the docs for import details.
Who should pick which
Pick Zeni if you want a dedicated finance team to keep your books daily, you want tax filing, CFO advice, bill pay, and payroll management from one vendor, and a bookkeeping plan starting at $549/month fits your budget.
Pick ClearBooks if you want to own your books, you are comfortable approving the work an AI agent proposes, you want your own AI tools to read and write your ledger through MCP or the API, and you want low-cost software that prepares the 1120 and tracks your SAFEs. Frequently asked questions
Is ClearBooks a Zeni alternative?
It is an alternative approach. Zeni is a full-service finance platform where AI works alongside a dedicated finance team that keeps your books. ClearBooks is accounting software with an AI bookkeeping agent that you direct and approve. Founders who want to run their own books at software prices choose ClearBooks; founders who want finance handled for them choose a service like Zeni.
Does ClearBooks include a bookkeeper or finance team?
No. ClearBooks is software, not a done-for-you bookkeeping service. The AI agent does routine bookkeeping with your confirmation, and you can invite your own bookkeeper or CPA with the Accountant role.
Do I need QuickBooks to use ClearBooks?
No. ClearBooks is its own double-entry ledger. Zeni says QuickBooks Online Plus is required to sync with its dashboard and will migrate you to it if you use other software.
How does ClearBooks MCP compare with Zeni MCP?
Zeni MCP connects Claude, OpenAI Codex, and Google Antigravity to your Zeni books with 20 read-only tools and is included with Zeni Bookkeeping. The ClearBooks MCP server offers more than 300 tools that can read and write, limited by the scopes you grant each API key, alongside a REST API.
How do the costs compare?
ClearBooks has a free Starter plan, Pro at $29 per month, and Business at $99 per month. As of October 2026, Zeni lists AI Bookkeeping from $549 per month (Starter) and $799 per month (Growth), tax plans from $2,499 per year, and fractional CFO plans from $1,599 per month plus a setup fee.
